Overview

Video Translator collects no data. None.

Video Translator is a Chrome extension, published by Tasknetic, that translates YouTube video subtitles and on-screen text. It is built to be genuinely privacy-preserving: all processing happens locally on your device, and nothing you watch, read, or type is ever transmitted to us or to any third party. We do not operate any server that receives your data, because the extension never sends any.

This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what the extension does and does not do with information on your device.

What Data We Process (and Why It Never Leaves Your Device)

To translate what appears on screen, the extension processes the following entirely on your device:

• Video frames / on-screen imagery. When you use the translation feature, the extension reads pixels from the YouTube video area you have selected in order to detect and read text. This optical character recognition (OCR) runs locally using bundled Tesseract.js and ONNX PP-OCR models executed in WebAssembly. Frames are processed in memory and discarded; they are never stored or uploaded.
• Recognized and translated text. The text detected by OCR is translated using Chrome's built-in, on-device Translator and Language Detector APIs (available in Chrome 138 and later). Translation happens locally within your browser. The text is not sent to us or to any external translation service.

In short: the images and text the extension works with are handled locally, used only to display a translation back to you, and are not retained after the work is done.

Data We Do NOT Collect

To be explicit, Video Translator does not:

• Collect, store, or transmit any personal information
• Use analytics, telemetry, tracking, or usage metrics of any kind
• Include third-party advertising or tracking SDKs
• Record your browsing history, watch history, or search activity
• Send video frames, screenshots, audio, or recognized text to any external server
• Load or execute remote code
• Create a user profile or identifier of any kind

There is no account to create and no login required to use the extension.

Local Storage & Sync

The extension saves your preferences — such as your chosen languages and the subtitle region you select — using Chrome's chrome.storage.sync mechanism.

• These settings are stored locally in your browser.
• If you are signed in to Chrome and have sync enabled, Chrome may sync these settings across your own devices through your own Google account. This is handled entirely by Chrome and Google, not by us.
• Tasknetic never receives these settings. We have no server and no access to your synced data.

You can clear these settings at any time by removing the extension or clearing its storage through your browser.

Permissions & Why We Need Them

Video Translator requests only the minimum permissions required to function:

• Host access to YouTube (https://*.youtube.com/*) — required. The extension runs only on YouTube. It cannot read or act on any other website. This access is what allows it to display translations over the video you are watching.
• storage — required. Used to save your language preferences and subtitle region selection, as described above.
• offscreen — required. Used to run the local OCR worker in an offscreen document so text detection can happen in the background without disrupting playback.

The extension does not request permission to access your browsing data on other sites, your identity, your files, or your network activity.

Third-Party Links

The extension's popup contains two optional links that open only if you choose to click them:

• A Ko-fi donation page
• A Google Forms feedback form

These links are provided for your convenience. When you click one, you leave the extension and visit a third-party website whose data practices are governed by that provider's own privacy policy (Ko-fi's or Google's, respectively). We do not receive any information about whether or how you use these links. If you never click them, no connection to those services is ever made.

Children's Privacy

Video Translator is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children. Because the extension collects no personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has somehow provided personal information in connection with the extension, please contact us and we will address the matter, though as noted the extension is not designed to receive or store such information.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, to reflect changes in the extension's features or to improve clarity. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If a future change materially affects how the extension handles information, we will make a reasonable effort to highlight it. Your continued use of the extension after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
